A Trillion Dollars to a Homeless Man

Yesterday I found a newspaper left on a picnic table
It said Apple had become the first trillion-dollar company
A trillion, hell, I don’t even know if I can count to a million
I know their phones all too well; I see them every day at the landfill
That’s how I’ve been able to get by, these last five years
Begging on street corners haunted my soul too much to continue on
And God knows my psychotic brain can’t hold a job for long
It always ends with my ass kicked to the curb to begin again
But now I’ve got it made, recycling those Apple phones
The electronics store pays me five whole dollars for every one
No more than ten a week they said, that’s fine, I can survive
But, a trillion dollars, wow, I still don’t understand how
If their old phones are piling up all over the dump
I guess they must be doing something right, or have some sort of know how
Because people keep buying new phones despite the old ones being tossed
All that money and yet it’s not enough to make a phone last
I may be slow, but even I know there’s something wrong with that
