A STUTTERING SALESMAN

It is easy to get lost in the mundane responsibilities of life without realizing the clock ticking in front of us unless a peculiarity manages to find its way into our lives and helps us notice a moment distinctively.

Yesterday one such person caught my attention and brought forth the feeling of bliss in existence. A friend and I went to buy some utensils that our new cook had demanded, and as we expected, the shop was inundated with all possible kitchenware appliances that we had to keep following each other to not get lost in the pile of items.

A sales guy who would be in his initial 20s welcomed us with the same sincerity and commitment that he had vowed to the job on the day he joined. When we mentioned what we wanted, like most of the inexperienced sales guys, he pretended to have listened what we said and showed us the most profitable variants of the mentioned items. It did not get under my skin as the poor guy was just doing his job. The guy was stuttering, and in a couple of minutes, we realized that he genuinely had a stammering problem.

To not to discourage him, I found the items I wanted and asked him certain questions about it for formality. Although he was clueless, his effort to make the sale did the job for me. After buying, I went to him and asked why he was in sales profession in spite of his stammering. His answer made me and my friend smile.

His stammering had been much worse in his childhood, and it was because of his consistent practice that he had overcome it to a certain extent. His commitment to practice had led him to choose sales and he now genuinely admires speaking to people. While we were asking him why he had chosen sales in spite of his stammering, he answered he had chosen it because of the stammering.

He also added that if he could overcome stammering in few years, it would give him enough confidence to overcome other problems in his life as well. We wished him luck and went on our ways with another moment to cherish about.
