How To Master Self Discipline That Lasts

Unlock your full potential

How many times are you determined to improve your self-discipline, only to find yourself getting back to the old routines?

You write down a list of new habits, feel motivated to follow through and believe that it is easy to attain, but could not last for a few weeks?

Things happen for a reason and you have a couple of them.

· You missed a workout due to work.

· You attended a few birthday celebrations and needed to welcome the feasts

· You felt restless during work and needed to check your Instagram feeds for a quick ‘perk-me-up’

After that, guilt sinks in, you beat yourself up, give yourself some motivational talk and the cycle repeats.

What if you can actually stop this vicious cycle and make real changes to have self discipline that lasts?

In this article, I will teach you everything you need to know to improve your self-discipline effectively.

What Truly Is Self Discipline?

Self discipline is a state of mind. The motivation has to come from within you and you have to truly care about the outcome of your goal. You need to ask yourself what is the goal that you want to achieve.

The goal has to be a strong desire, so strong that you will do whatever it takes to get there. It can be to earn $x to provide a better life for your family. It can be to lose xkg to lead a healthier life and boost your confidence.

The goal needs to truly mean something to you.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

There will be times where you are placed in a situation that is out of your control and you are forced to give up on your routine. This is part and parcel of life so don’t knock yourself down. Self discipline is not about trying to fight against the difficulties but to understand it, walk your way through it and find ways to stick to it a little at a time.

Here are the strategies to build a solid foundation on your journey towards improved self discipline.

Environment: Remove Temptations

“Bloom where you’re planted.”

Imagine if you were on the journey to quit smoking. However, the friends around you do smoke. You hang out with them often and have to wait around for them to finish the smoking activity each time after meal. You are going to have a hard time trying to resist the temptation in front of you. Alternatively, if you were to hang out with a friend who hasn’t smoked before in his entire life. Smoking becomes something that has never been acted out or a topic that hasn’t been brought up by either one of you when hanging out. By removing the temptation, this makes self discipline automatic and more manageable.

There are many ways to remove temptations in your environment. It can be the people surrounding you, or the items around you. If you are on an improved dietary plan, remove all the junk food in the house. If you want to get up on time every day instead of hitting snooze, keep the alarm clock far away from you so that you need to get up and turn off the alarm every morning.

Instead of fighting against your existing environment, change your environment.

Well-Being: Eat And Sleep Well

“I’m a better parent when I have enough energy and focus to give my daughter my best.”

Imperfection: Forgive Yourself

“I think self-discipline is like a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.”

Don’t hold yourself to a sky-high level of self discipline. We can never attain perfect performance every single time and beating yourself up on every mistake will only make you feel insufficient. You don’t have to be perfect, you just have to keep going. Self discipline is not about wanting to attain perfection in everything you do. It’s about facing the mistakes and having the grit and resilience to persist on and keep going, believing that you will improve overtime.

Compound: Small But Consistent Steps

“If we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently.”

When I started out as a rookie copywriter, I made the decision to copy successful ad copy word for word by hand every day. It was a tiring process but I chose to press on and continued the process each day. As a result of this daily practice, I am able to know the formula for writing persuasive copywriting by heart and am familiar with the power words that could lead to better sales conversions. I know that this is all because of those ad copy that I had written by hand overtime.

This is not a difficult process. In fact, it is simple. All you need is actions accompanied with consistency. The key here is not to choose a task that requires intense effort. Pick a task that is simple enough for you to set aside time to do it every day. Overtime, you will start seeing surprising results.

Long-Term: Delayed Gratification

“The ability to discipline yourself to delay gratification in the short term in order to enjoy greater rewards in the long term is the indispensable prerequisite for success.”

In order for efforts to come to fruition, time is required. For instance, for me to save up to buy a bigger home, I will need to save $x each month. I need to resist the temptation to go out to parties or join my friends on their overseas trips. I will need to do this for a period of time. Or if I need to pick up the skills for digital marketing in order to provide value-added services to my customers, it could take months or years of practice to master this skill. You can set realistic timeframes for yourself to improve your awareness to delay gratification and prevent impulse decisions. Mastering the art of delayed gratification for something better in the future puts you a step ahead of others for the long term. It is one of the most important traits in successful entrepreneurs, the ability to resist immediate desires to pursue long term goals.

Mindset: Change The Voice In Your Head

“In many situations, the only thing you can control is your own response.”

Whenever a negative voice comes in your head, immediately change the voice to a new positive one.

Here are some examples of ways to change the negative voice in your head:

Negative voice: I have tried for so long but still could not do it well. I couldn’t do it.

New Voice: I have tried for so long and yet I’m still not giving up! I’m a superman/superwoman and I’ll always be! I will keep improving and if this continues, I know I will get there someday!

Negative voice: I can’t do 30 pushups each day, I just can’t. Why is everyone else able to do it but me?

New Voice: 30 push-ups is too much for my body to take! So I’ll do 10 today, 12 tomorrow and 14 the day after! Slowly but surely I can do it!

Be your own cheerleader. Try this activity whenever the voice comes along.

What’s next?

Start implementing the strategies listed above today. Self discipline isn’t a superhuman ability. Anyone is capable of having lasting self discipline as long as you are willing to take action, get started and keep going on your journey towards your destination.

“Self-discipline is a key to many doors. Not least of which is one that leads to a better, stronger, and healthier version of yourself.”- Zero Dean
