He seals 450 frames per hour

The need for images is increasing while purchasing prices are being pushed down. Photographer and microstock king Yuri Arcurs tips on the way to the money.

How to take photos?
- It is important that you keep the theme and the object in mind at all times when shooting. You have to know what it is you want to show and make sure everything that contributes to the message sticks to the picture. I choose most real models because it is the content that, in my experience, sells the most. But the overall composition of the image is not enough. That is why it is important to work with the entire set up. Make sure the lighting is set up correctly. Use the right supplies. Create a content that people can relate to. Make sure your model understands what it is you want to show in the image. Although photography is only part of the job, you must also first understand the interaction between people. And you have to dig deep to figure it out. It’s actually one of the reasons I created my website: so that people had nowhere to start digging.

How do you sell pictures in the best way?
- I think right now it is best to sell the pictures themselves and not through picture agencies. Creating a small web shop is very easy. Get a website and a PayPal account, and you’re on the right track. Commissions from, for example, iStockphoto and Shutterstock are currently available — in our estimation you only get 1/5 of the actual sales. You have to manage your marketing yourself through social media and direct contact with customers. If you can get 50 customers who come back every month and buy pictures, it will be profitable. I think most people can do it.

- Of course, the situation can change, but it’s also good to know that competition is extreme at microstock firms. If you can’t or don’t want to start your own business, I suggest that 3–6 photographers get together and collect their photos collectively. One of the advantages of being included in a larger context is that you do not have to deal with customers directly. This way you will not have to spend your days on time-consuming tasks such as payment management, customer support, complaints, and so on. If you collaborate with a few other photographers, you can share the costs of marketing and the time to manage the webshop. Everyone wins it. Although if you are looking to start your own company, you can always start by sending pictures to a photo agency. You can always fly solo later.

What kind of equipment should you have from the beginning? — I think the new Nikon D800 and D800e are fantastic cameras, and I see them total Canon Eos 5D killer. I think the D800 is a good camera for video and semi-professional, and I expect the D800 to be the obvious choice for the professional photographer. I will definitely buy the D800e myself. Probably ten. There seems to be some confusion about the differences between the D800 and D800e, but if you compare the specs you can see that the D800 is suitable for filming. It gives you less moire, and this will save exposures in environments that are difficult to control. But if you work professionally, you avoid the clothes that give more, so it can just as well bet on the better D800e.

The only way to really fix moire is to give the model another shirt, and it must have been done in a controlled environment like a photo studio. So why not focus directly on a camera that gives you the sharpest images?
