What to Know Before Hiking in Florida

Florida is known for its incredible trails; hiking here is unlike anywhere else in the country. That being said, because of the state’s unique climate and the challenges the wildlife present, hikers need to ensure they’re full prepared before venturing into the great outdoors.

There can be a great deal of heat and humidity in the air, so ensure you have more than enough water and sufficient protection. Just because a day is overcast doesn’t mean you won’t get burnt, so apply sunscreen often and wear hats and lightweight clothing. You’re going to need bug spray. There are mosquitoes, spiders, ticks and redbugs to defend yourself against, so be sure to find a brand that will provide protection against all of the aforementioned.

This period is the best time of year to go on hiking trips, especially if you’re going planning on going for more than five miles. If you’re just completing a quick hike any time of year is fine, however you should be off the trail by noon.

As tropical storms can happen at the drop of a hat, trails can suddenly become flooded with little notice. Swamps and rivers can become enlarged and trails can be submerged. Check beforehand if there’s any information about flooding in the area, and delay your hike if this is the case.

Always have a map and compass, and hike with a friend if possible. Let people know where you’re hiking to and what time you should be back. Carry spare water, food, and a signaling device (such as a mirror) just in case.

The sunshine state is home to all kinds of wildlife — its’ one of the reasons why it’s such an excellent hiking destination. However you need to respect the animals in order to ensure your safety. There are venomous snakes, bears, and wild hogs, so check before hiking if any of these animals frequent the area, and seek advice on how to avoid placing yourself in danger.

Be aware of the hunting status in anywhere you’re camping. Wear blaze orange and only set up camp in designated areas.

Remember a good hiking trip is dependent on how prepared you are. Plan, use your common sense, and leave no trace so the areas can be enjoyed by nature lovers for years to come.
