Differences Between Old Money And New Money

When you think about the families Rockefeller, Getty, DuPont, Rothschild, Vanderbilt, and Astor, you’re probably thinking about “old money” family empires. These wealthy families have existed for centuries, and their wealth has been passed down through the generations. People who represent “new money” are generally those who acquired their wealth through a variety of businesses and solid investments. The interesting kicker is that even though “new money” individuals and families are well-off financially, they’re often not fully accepted as truly upper-class by the “old money” establishment. Here are some differences between old money and new money individuals.

Those who come from old money are less likely to advertise their riches and legacy to the world. This is why you will rarely see those from old money on TV shows that give viewers a tour of well-known figures’ homes and personal collectibles. With new money, however, they’re excited to show off their wealth and spend to their heart’s content on anything they want.

Those from new money tend to not be as snobby as those from old money although some from new money can be this way towards non-wealthy individuals. Those from new money tend to be more laid-back and relatable than those from old money. Many old money families are not too welcoming of anyone who doesn’t share the same social class, wealth, and family background as them.

Those from old money tend to have more class and better etiquette than those from new money. Many of them were educated at private schools and they received lessons on how to conduct themselves in different social settings their whole lives. Those from new money may not have the same level of class and graciousness as old money families.
