King of the Hill

Engineers are always going to face challenges in their work because we are challenging the norms of society with each new invention we create. We are trying to make the world a better and easier place to live in each day. Two of the inventors that helped make our planet a better and easier place to live in were the inventors of the vacuum and dishwasher. Hubert Booth and David Kenny took on the challenge of creating something that could clean faster and dispose of a mess easier. The real challenge was for Josephine Cochran who invented the dishwasher. As a women during her time, most women were stereotyped into being a house cleaner and stay at home mom. Josephine challenged this and created an easier way for females at the time to complete house hold jobs. Making washing dishes a simpler task helped many women during her time and also allowed them to spend more time with her family. I want to be able to create inventions just like these that challenge the normal ways of daily life and help families come together.

The main challenge I could face while making house hold inventions is being able to change the way families normally function. Many people are scared of change, and making a new household item or an easier way to complete a daily task could cause some positive change in a families daily life. Many new household inventions fade out as well, or do not completely take over America like the dishwasher and the vacuum did. For example, I was very interested in inventing a toothbrush cleaner. Nearly everyone in America has a toothbrush, but very little have electric toothbrushes. This household item didn’t completely take over because normal toothbrushes are very popular still, and this could be a challenge I face with a toothbrush cleaner. The toothbrush cleaner could be used with both electric and regular toothbrushes but many people may choose to stick with the simple inexpensive ways of cleaning a tooth brush or not cleaning it at all. Marketing and background research about the germs found on tooth brushes will be a main factor in being able to get households to switch to a toothbrush cleaner instead of simply running water over the brush.

I love challenges. Being a walk on for the baseball team here at UNLV has presented many challenges and I never want to give up or backdown from a challenge. All of the challenges of being an engineer excite me and I can’t wait to create many household inventions and make the lives of many families better and easier.
