UX without research

This title is neither a portability…. nor a metaphor for some designer problem. No. We simply — sometimes we have to design without contact with the user. But one by one…

Research as a basis for UX — this is mantra. There is nothing to discuss with this. We all know the full project cycle, definition of project sprints etc. etc. It seems to me that this is the “secret” in the industry, but it should be said out loud. Yes — sometimes I ignore user tests in the design process.

I know that I do wrong, but if I face a choice: Deliver an untested project, and not deliver the project at all, because there is no time for testing — I choose the former. Why? The key word is here: deliver.

Between UX Designer and user is Business. Business dictates the pace of product development. Business is your link with the user. It determines the delivery process. The undelivered effect of your work can land in a drawer and no one will bend over it.

Someone could say that UX without research is a fortune teller. But really? Do you really need research to design an MVP? I don’t like this comparison, but it fits like nowhere: This is not rocket technology. Research, benchmark, improvise and most importantly: remember that the result of your work is only the first step. After all, the product will be developed.

Either way, the tests will be carried out, and since we’re living on the product — this is the result of a business decision and your job as UX Designer is to make them aware of it.

Of course — in an ideal world business is aware of the importance of UX in product development. In an ideal world. If you don’t have the comfort of working in a user-centered body — fight, improvise and bite like a small monkey. If you do not provide (even temporary) solutions, nobody will do it for you.
