Some Quarantine Musings From 2020

Memories made in tight quarters

Here are some of my thoughts from the end of March 2020. The world pushed pause in our area on March 13th. I plan to share a few of these, as I wasn’t on Medium at the time. My wife and I have five kids, so navigating that historic event was an interesting time. We laughed more than we cried, but not every day or everyone.

So I heard an interview with some fitness guy the other day. He does 1,500 pushups per day, even well into his 50s. While I don’t do any, I have been behaving with my eating habits most of the time. I am trying to sneak some Valentine’s candy here and there, but Natalea is always there to bust me. If I’m even moving my mouth she’ll say,

While my metabolism is at hyper speed, Nattie Rose is faster.

The other day Ryan got himself in some hot water by not using his listening ears. He’s almost 3, so it’s a common thing. He kept not listening to point that Megan, our 9-month-old, ended up getting hurt because of it. Will was his hands-off partner in crime, so neither of them was allowed dessert after dinner. In an effort to keep me from eating all the candy, we’ve been doing dessert a lot lately. Anyways, the boys took the penalty for their sins pretty well. Young Ryan duped us though when he dropped a deuce after dinner. See he’s been struggling with the pooping part of going on the potty. So he gets a treat whenever he does, for now. As soon as he finished his business, his eyes got really big and he said,

We’ve been played.

We have been loving the game Clue during this immediate family-only party. We’re learning that the kids aren’t always truthful, playing with a beginning reader is tough, and allowing the kids to fill the envelope can make for the longest game ever. One recent game was all about location, location, location; three of them were in the envelope. We took a couple of days off after that.

We’ve laughed until we cried, and some of us have just cried. Pretty much everyday has something that moves us either way. We’re making memories, that’s for sure. Very loud memories!

Oh, and Andrea is handling all these Wildcat departures much better than I am. She just learned who Nick Richards is today. Oh to care so little.

Laugh through life's difficult times. You’ll look back on them with more fondness than you might realize while they’re happening. Those were tricky times but we made it. You’re gonna make it today.
