How Does Trinitarian Theology Shape Christian Worship?

Trinitarian theology should shape our worship every single week if we want to have services that point to the God of the Bible. When encountering the God of the Bible through the reading of Scripture, we see that He is three persons in one, each person is God, yet they are distinct from each other. I think we (I’ll be referring to the American Church when using “we”) do a great job of talking about God the Father and God the Son, but we miss something with God the Spirit. One aspect of trinitarian theology that will determine the effectiveness of our worship is how we teach, sing, and instruct our people on God the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus was preparing his disciples of his departure from this earth to return to his Father in Heaven, he said in John 14:16–17,

We see that Jesus is instructing his disciple on who the Holy Spirit is, what His purpose is, and where he comes from. We see here that the Holy Spirit is given by The Father to us. We see that the disciples “know him, for he lives with [them] and will be in [them]” (v. 17). In the next chapter of John, chapter 15 in verse 26, Jesus tells the disciples the Holy Spirit “goes out from the Father — he will testify about [Jesus].” It is amazing we see all three persons of the Trinity in that statement. God the Father sends God the Spirit, who in turn testifies about God the Son. So this is obviously something important Jesus wants the disciples to know before he leaves. I believe this is just as important for the people we lead each Sunday. We must clarify who God the Father is, how he sends us His Spirit of Truth, who tells us the truth about Jesus.

How does this practically happen on a Sunday morning as we lead our congregation in worship? How do we make sure we’re bringing the knowledge of the Holy Spirit to our people? One aspect that I’ve been challenged with this year is thinking of the worship service as a whole, not just the singing portion. If we want to instruct our people we would be doing a disservice if we only facilitated this during the singing portion. Many times I default to singing about whatever topic I want to teach that week. I get honed in on one very short aspect of the service plan. For instance, if my pastor is preaching a series on the Holy Spirit, I might only look at songs that have to do with the word “holy spirit.” But is this really the best way to teach about the person of the Holy Spirit? Why not think of including something during the welcome or announcement section of the service plan? We could add in a time to learn more of who the Holy Spirit is during an intro to a song. We could take a time of prayer and invite the Holy Spirit to open our minds to the truth — to lead us into truth. I want to expand my understanding of how instruction belong music. The Holy Spirit needs some time to explain and unpack, and this can’t be confined only to music.

Orthodoxy is defined as “right worship.” If we as Christians want to worship God the Father in Spirit, we must also worship Him in truth. This only happens when we invite the Spirit of Truth into our worship services every Sunday morning.
